Pint of Science in Aachen

Glowing cells in jellyfish, AI for social good, diseases and vaccines, and process mining

On this day we will have 4 amazing talks. To start with, we will have a talk about glowing cells, followed by how Artificial Intelligence can be used for catching online criminal activities. The third on the list is on the eradication of infectious diseases that has always been one of humanity’s biggest dreams, and finally how and why we must X Ray business organizations.

GFP the Green Flourescent jellyfish Protein that makes cell glow

Dr Martin Hess (PhD, Antibodies-Online company)

Ever wondered how scientists make cells glow? Join us at Pint of Science in Aachen as Dr. Martin Hess dives into the fascinating world of GFP – the Green Fluorescent Protein! Discover its Nobel Prize-winning story, its game-changing role in modern biology, and the stunning images that make science shine. Don’t miss this glowing talk!

Using Artificial Intelligence to link trafficking criminals on online illegal marketplaces

Vageesh Saxena (PhD Student, Maastricht University)

How do you link a shadowy username to a real-world criminal? Spoiler: Their writing style and behavioral traits are their downfall. In this talk, discover how AI decodes linguistic fingerprints, image metadata, and behavioral breadcrumbs to expose trafficking networks. We’ll explore how algorithms:
✅ Connect criminal aliases across platforms
✅ Measure the scale of illegal ops
✅ Help law enforcement disrupt hidden markets.
Sounds Interesting? Come meet me at Pint of Science. Let’s geek out together on tech-for-good!

The eradication of human infectious diseases: a dream or a reality

Jorge Armero Gimenez (Scientist, LenioBio GmbH)

I will talk about the intertwined history of disease and humanity, and examples of how we have fought traditionally against it and the advances that brought us where we are today. Be ready to learn about the great steps that led to the eradication of one of humanities‘ greatest foes, smallpox, and the current state of affairs and challenges we still face and what we might fight in the future!

X-Raying Business Processes: Seeing the Unseen with Process Mining

Ali Norouzifar (PhD student, RWTH University)

In my talk, X-Raying Business Processes: Seeing the Unseen with Process Mining, I will explore how organizations can uncover hidden inefficiencies—just like an X-ray reveals what the eye cannot see. We will look at how research-driven techniques can help discover process models, extract meaningful insights, and pinpoint the root causes of inefficiencies. Moreover, we will explore how recent advances in large language models have opened up exciting possibilities, enabling us to incorporate not just data but also expert knowledge and natural language documents to support more powerful and holistic analyses.

Pint of Science is a global science festival that brings researchers out of the lab and into local venues to share their work with the public – all in an accessible and engaging way.
